All of the 7th graders will be going to the Valley Branch Environmental Center the third and last week in March to begin designing an experimental science experiment based on questions generated by their observations in the field. Their experiment will continue through the spring when they will return to their Valley Branch site. After their trip, students will receive their data by email, collected by environmental scientists. Students will also have videoconference chats with the scientist over the months before their return in May. Look for your student’s field trip slip. We welcome your help on these field trips, March 25, 28,29. Our spring dates are May 27,28,29. Ames Lake Community Clean –Up by Cleveland Students
Cleveland students are doing their part as community members by cleaning up the Ames Lake and Swede Hollow community Watershed. Cleveland Junior High School has adopted Ames Lake through the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) “Adopt a River” program. We are committed to clean-up Ames Lake area at least two times during the school year. Last year was special because the DNR conducted a controlled prairie burn at Ames Lake. After the burn there was a lot of trash exposed. St.Paul Park and Recreation called on us to help clean-up Ames Lake. We feel a part of the community when we are looked on to help when needed. The trash collected is measured by weight or number of bags collected. This data is used to determine the environmental health of a wetland by the DNR. The students record what was collected and where items were found as a scientific look at what activities people do around Ames Lake and where the trash is originating from. Over the years we will have a study that measures any improvement of the environment from our collected efforts as a community.
This fall students visited the Newport Resource Recovery Plant to learn about what happens to our trash after it gets picked up at our doorstep. Then went to Ames Lake to pick up trash that never made it to a trash barrel.
