Space Camp 2009 Blog and general description.
Approximately forty sixth and eight graders will journey off to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama this weekend, October 4-9.  Follow us here through our travels, learning experiences and fun!

We arrived at the airport around 5:00 AM Sunday morning. Most of us were excited and prepared. We had no issues with check in, actually it went quite smoothly. Thanks Mrs. Wall and Air Tran.  Security went easily as well. No one packed illegal items and only some food for lunches was looked over for reasons we'll never know. Sticky rice must not make it into security very often. They didn't know it was food.
The plane took off on time. All of the students did quite well. We got to an elevation of 41,000 feet and traveled about 815 miles using about 1,500 gallons of fuel. The flight was supposed to take just under 2 hours but we had a big tail wind and the total flight was only about 1:40.  The Atlanta airport was really busy so we had to sit on the runway for a while until they made room for us.
We made connections with the coach bus easily. We had no issues getting our luggage and had some very friendly airport people help us. The bus driver was quite nice and took us to a grocery store where Ms. Schreiber bought a soda for each person for our lunch beverage. The ride was about 4 hours. A few got car sick but it wasn't too bad.  On the way we learned that the Twins baseball team won their final game and is going to play in a one game playoff against Detroit for a birth in the baseball playoffs. This made Ms. Schreiber and Mr. Barrett really happy. They were quite jovial!
When we arrived at Space Camp at around 4:30 we were met by some very friendly camp staff that gave us bedding and showed us our rooms. This was really sweet because many of us haven't slept in a place shaped like this or that felt like a college dorm. We got our first meal and played games and learned about where everything is located at camp before heading to the showers and bed at about 9:00. Some called their families, others will do this over the next few days.
This was a great beginning. We miss our families and friends but know that we will see them on Friday and our school friends next week.

Students got into activities right after breakfast. They built rockets, rode in astronaut training simulators, learned about life in space, rode in fighter jet simulators and learned a lot of science.
